The 24-hour news media make it clear—people all over the world are talking about American arrogance. Perhaps that’s to be expected at a time in history when the planet only has one superpower nation, but there is also a strange aspect to it, in that many Americans also ascribe arrogance to themselves. Especially in the news media, public speakers often make a cause out of decrying the lack of humility that the rest of the American populace supposedly feels. These commentators look at America and see, mainly, dysfunctional pandemonium. The pandemonium exists, of course. But what the critics fail to acknowledge is that the roots of pandemonium wind deeply down into their own misconceptions about where the strength of this society is actually derived. This book is about all of us, here in America, because it’s about one of the futures that we have available. While that future isn’t guaranteed, of course, it’s accessible with determination. Inside of this future, personal freedom endures. It is not slowly gobbled by gluttony and greed. In this future, we collectively determine to draw the line at the borders of personal freedom. In this version of the future, we remain a free society, even as we continue tailoring and adapting that freedom in order to perfect the application of the idea—just as it’s been done here for so many generations already.
